Lundeberg was born in Chicago and moved to Pasadena, California, with her family in 1912. She was a gifted child and as a young adult was inclined to become a writer. After taking an art class taught by Lorser Feitelson at the Stickney Memorial School of Art in Pasadena, however, Lundeberg was inspired to pursue a career as an artist.

Her artistic style changed over the course of her career, and has been described variously as Post-Surrealism, Hard-edge painting and Subjective Classicism. Childhood and Education While born in Chicago, Helen Lundeberg spent almost her entire life in California having initially moved to the city of Pasadena at the age of four to accommodate her father's job at a stock brokerage and real estate firm. Helen Lundeberg described herself as a “ terribly visual” person and remembered staring out of the window of her family’s car as a child, watching the landscape of Pasadena flicker by (Oral History Program, University of California, 1982).
